Herringbone tiles are available in Virtual Worlds through select supplier catalogues. However, you can also create your own custom herringbone tiles to match specific designs using the Generic Tile Templates.
To search for pre-existing herringbone tiles, see the article: Using a Tile Catalogue: Searching and Selecting Templates and Patterns.
If you want to create your own herringbone tile pattern, follow the steps below.
Creating a Custom Herringbone Tile
The steps to create a custom tile for a herringbone tile template is largely the same as demonstrated in Creating custom tiles, however there is one key difference that is covered in Setting the Tile Dimensions below.
Setting the Tile Dimensions
To ensure your custom tile aligns correctly in a herringbone layout, maintain the same aspect ratio as a standard herringbone tile. This is done on the Database Tile Record screen during tile creation.
- Example: If an existing tile is 360 pixels wide and 180 pixels high, your custom tile should maintain the same 2:1 ratio.
Additionally, if you are using herringbone tiles from a rectified template, ensure that the Physical Dimension includes grout lines. For example, if selecting a herringbone tile from the Rectified Templates (4mm Grout) range, the physical dimensions should be 4mm smaller than the nominal dimensions to account for grout spacing.
How to use my custom tile in a design.
To use your custom tile, first apply the herringbone tile template to a surface. Once created, you can replace existing herringbone tiles in a template. Follow the steps in: Replacing Tiles in a Template.
Saving Your Custom Herringbone Template
Once your custom herringbone tile is applied, you can save the template for future use in One-Touch Tiling. Follow these steps:
- Select one of the tiles on the surface.
- Right-click and choose Save Template.
- Select the catalogue you want to save it in (e.g. your Custom Tile catalogue).
- Enter a name for the template and click Save.
Your template is now stored and can be quickly applied in future designs using One-Touch Tiling.
